Help With Food Addiction

What is Food Addiction?

Food addiction is also referred to as compulsive overeating. The pattern of overeating does not necessarily lead to pleasurable feelings or feelings of reward for the person but it is a repeated behaviour. Thoughts can be consumed with plans about time alone dedicated to eating.

How do I know I/someone else is addicted to food?

Quite commonly food addiction manifests in the form of bouts of uncontrollable eating referred to as ‘binges’. Large amounts of food can be consumed over short periods of time. Frenetic behaviour and feelings of being out of control can occur during the binge followed by feeling low and guilty post binge.

Food addiction is not always characterised by food binges alone; eating constantly throughout the day known as ‘grazing’ can also take place. Those suffering with a food addiction can also eat when they are not hungry and do not tend to deprive themselves of food to make up for the times when they excessively eat.

It is also important to remember that whilst it can be common for someone with a food addiction to be overweight this is not always the case, those of a more average weight can also be affected.

As well as the serious physical problems associated with overeating and being overweight food addiction can also lead to sufferers experiencing low self esteem and depression.
