Alcohol Detox

Alcohol Detox

Going through an alcohol detox can be a seriously unpleasant experience, not to mention dangerous if not done in the right way.

Many people who suffer from alcoholism and then stop drinking suffer from withdrawal symptoms; the most common include, shaking, sweating, vomiting, delirium tremens (the DTs) and in some severe cases, seizures.

It is thus clear that in order to limit the risk to the individual and try and reduce the severity of these symptoms, it is important for people to seek professional help prior to commencing a detox.

A detox can be carried out in a variety of settings (home, hospital, rehab facility), but no matter where an individual seeks help, they are likely to be treated with medications in order to help with the physical symptoms of withdrawal.

One of the most common medications used in chlordiazepoxide (also known as Librium), and this helps reduce the severity of the symptoms.

Other treatments may also be used, such as vitamins, as commonly individuals who suffer from alcoholism also have vitamin deficiencies, which can negatively impact their health.

Overall, although the process of detox is not enjoyable, it can be controlled and managed with medications and appropriate care, and is often a key step in helping an individual begin to overcome their addiction.
