Thinking about a private rehab clinic often brings with it associations of celebrity guests who go in for a holiday style rehab stay where they receive pampering and absolute luxury. It is also often associated with a rather large amount of money.
But, private rehabilitation clinics are actually very varied in their treatment approach, their accommodation and even the price. And it is not always a guarantee that just because a clinic charges more, they will be the best. Some of the exclusive 'celebrity' clinics have even come under fire for their standards (The Independent, 2010). As with most things in life, choosing one of the many private drug rehab clinics is all down to the individual who needs treatment, and what they need from it.
Some private rehab clinics use the 'traditional' methods of intervention such as group therapy and one to one counselling techniques. However there are other clinics that also utilise alternative methods to treat addiction. Some clinics emphasize the importance of spirituality in treatment. In such cases, research has suggested that those who embrace this element of a program tend to be more likely to succeed than those who do not (Firestone, 2008).
However, it appears that it is not due to the spirituality aspect of the program specifically, but to how people respond to a treatment program in general that affects how successful an individual is in their treatment. The more engaged an individual is, the more likely the intervention is to work. So in the cases of those who embraced the spiritual side of a treatment, it may have been the fact that they were open to the spirituality and thus more engaged overall, and others were deterred by the spiritual aspect and this resulted in a reluctance to really embed themselves into the program. Suggestions such as this demonstrate the importance of an individual choosing an intervention program that is suited to their own lifestyle and treatment needs. Unless a person is able to really connect with a program, it may limit their chances of success
