Substance Abuse can be treated

It is difficult to imagine a world without substance misuse.  It seems to be around us wherever we turn, it can impact our lives directly where we lose people we care about because of it; or we can be subject to abuse by someone who suffers from addiction.  It can impact our lives indirectly through high crime rates and financial impact on the services we all rely on. 

But there are systems in place to treat substance abuse, and one of the most common treatments for an addiction problem is rehab.  Rehab can be an essential tool is helping an individual handle and hopefully stop their use of dangerous substances.  But what should the treatment entail?

Often we hear of celebrities booking into expensive high class rehabilitation clinics, where they are subject to pampering and relaxation classes.  But considering that many of these people later go on to use drugs after they have left, it leaves us wondering if maybe a substance abuse treatment program shouldn't be a little tougher in their approach.

It clearly makes sense that in order for an addiction to be addressed effectively, support, understanding and being able to talk openly about past issues will be essential.  However, a rehab centre in Oxfordshire has adjusted the traditional approach to treatment, and is instead given their residents their own independence and life skills back, as they set them to work while they take part in the program (Oxford Mail, 2008).  Residents have reported that the centre's style of treatment is tougher than prison, and it is thought that it is also more effective in treating addiction. 

The high success rates at the centre, suggest that in some cases perhaps rehabilitation needs to offer drug misusers the opportunity to develop their skills which can then empower them to stop their damaging behaviours.  Ultimately it is very dependent upon a person as to what will work, but it seems that in some cases, tough love works.
