With the rise in new drugs becoming increasingly available, and the persistence of more mainstream drugs being accessible, it is quickly becoming apparent that provisions need to be available for people who are dependent on these drugs, and or alcohol.
Access to a detox center can often be the starting point for an individual when they decide to free themselves of a drug or alcohol addiction. However, despite the fact that this need for access to detox centers is paramount in treating addiction, it can often be more difficult than it should be for people to access quality care and support.
In some areas of the UK, those who suffer from addiction may have to travel miles in order to gain access to treatment. It is only recently that some areas have begun opening up these centres, however the fact that they have opened at all is a sign that we are moving in the right direction with regards to treatment options. For example, recent news has reported that a detox center has finally opened in Cornwall, where previously people seeking treatment would have had to leave the county in order to begin their treatment (BBC News, 2010).
It is important, however to consider the face that in some cases sufferers may choose to go further afield to access treatment. But the most important factor is the element of choice. Depending on circumstances, a client may choose to enter into treatment in a new different area to where they live. This choice may be borne out of a need for a new environment, a guarantee of privacy (i.e. they will not risk bumping into people they know), or it may even be a desire to physically remove themselves from trigger points or bad social influences related to their addiction.
However, in other cases, it may be that people decide to seek treatment in their local area. This may be down to necessity, for example they have children they have to look after, or there may be financial considerations. Or it may be that the choice is made voluntarily for personal reasons; they may have social support in the local area that they could only have contact with if staying local.
The above reasons are just a drop in the ocean. As stated previously, it is the fact that people have choice in where people have the treatment, not the choice that they make that matters. However, people need to be able to have a choice in where they attend treatment, if we are to help empower them to make that commitment.
