A leading medic has called for the introduction of more fines to penalise people for being drunk in public.
In a letter to the British Medical Journal, plastic surgeon Peter Mahaffey said that people should face penalties even if they are not causing a nuisance.
He suggests that police should carry brethalysers and issue a £100 fine for anyone three-times or more above the drink-drive limit.
Mr Mahaffey argued that the measures are necessary to "send out a strong message" that binge drinking is not acceptable, and questioned why responsible drinkers should "pay" for the problem, referring to this week's tax hikes.
He suggested that the introduction of this legislation would cause a "change in attitude", adding: "The levels of drinking and the harm it is causing is depressing. I see people with terrible injuries that they will never recover from. Now is the time to act," according to the BBC.
Alistair Darling this week announced that alcohol will face tax increases of six per cent above inflation, and rise two per cent above inflation every year for four years.
