Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is a therapeutic approach used to help service users change how they think and how they behave. CBT allows service users to look at their thoughts and feelings at the present moment in time and ways to improve their current state of mind.
A recent study has been conducted in four behavioural health service facilities in California to investigate the effectiveness of CBT amongst those with substance misuse and depressive disorders. The study indicates that frequently, substance misuse and depression go hand and hand. However, it is often the case that only one of the problems are addressed, solely depression or substance misuse, rarely both. This study has indicated that using CBT within therapy can help address both of these.
Failing to offer support for both problems can result in increased substance misuse and a more severe state of depression.
Within this study there was an intervention group and a control group. Both groups were treated within a residential setting and monitored for a period of 3 years. The intervention group received CBT as part of their therapy, the control group did not.
The results of the study have indicated that those who were offered CBT as part of their therapy were coping better and progressing faster than those who did not. Following a period of CBT treatment, those that were no longer resident in a treatment centre had fewer episodes of substance misuse. Therefore, undergoing a period of CBT treatment would better equip a service user to quit drinking or control their level of intake.
This study has also suggested that the substance abuse treatment system within the public sector needs to be addressed to enable CBT to be incorporated within the treatment offered. This would heighten outcomes of success for those who with a history of substance misuse and depression.
