Alcohol Addiction Treatment
In December 2010, the Home Office released its new Drug Strategy outlining the government's approach to tackling drugs and addressing alcohol dependence: Drug Strategy 2010: Reducing demand, restricting supply, building recovery: supporting people to live a drug free life.
The strategy identified that the harmful use of alcohol is currently costing the NHS £2.7 billion (Department of Health, 2008), and have identified that intervening with this group by providing specialist alcohol addiction treatment is the route towards reducing this cost. The strategy aims to improve the provision of specialist alcohol treatment for those who would benefit from it.
The strategy aims to create a recovery system that focuses not only on getting people into treatment, but getting them into full recovery and off alcohol for good. The strategy recognises that recovery is an individual, person-centred journey, and so the aim is to provide tailored packages of care and support at a local level where the diverse needs of the community can be taken into account.
The government also aims to support services in working with individuals to draw on the four kinds of capital they have identified as necessary to achieved maintained recovery from alcohol, which are: social capital, the resource a person has from their interpersonal relationships, physical capital, such as money and a safe place to live, human capital, skills, mental and physical health, employment and cultural capital which refers to the values, beliefs and attitudes held by the individual.
The strategy aims to focus on 'end-to-end' support, where close links are forged between community, inpatient, and residential treatment and rehabilitation providers who in turn should forge close links with aftercare services. The focus will also be on promotion and support of local mutual aid networks such as Alcoholic Anonymous.
