Drug and alcohol addiction affects people globally, however rates of addiction can vary from one area to another, as do the access to treatment for a dependence. In the UK treatment options and addiction rates again vary widely depending on the region. It would be expected that heavily populated areas have higher associated rates of addiction. This not always the case though, and levels of addiction can vary, as does the support accessed.

A recent study found London to have amongst the lower rates of self reported alcohol dependence in a nationwide survey. Levels of just below 15% were reported in London, followed by areas in Wales and Scotland. London also had the highest levels of individuals without any form of dependence compared to other areas including the midlands, Wales, Scotland and cities in Ireland.

One interesting finding also came from the study, which showed that rates of service utilization were highest in several areas, one of which was london addiction treatment at 30.4%. This is a high rate in comparison to the overall statistic that only 24% on individuals suffering from a dependence make contact with local drug and alcohol services.

With higher service utilization this would suggest either more knowledge about how to access these services, higher referrals from GPs and other healthcare professional, or more feasibility to access private support.

There have been aims to improve addiction treatment in London, and other city locations though projects (Drink and Drug news, 2011). Voluntary and NHS sectors have come together and collaborated the services and resources they have. By condensing the staff and resources it has allowed the areas included in the drug project to be more efficient in the treatment they offer.

In addition to this private residential clinics are widespread in the London area. The priory group have a high number of their treatment centres in and around the London area, and there are also a number of independent clinic also operating to provide immediate access to addiction treatment in this area.

This may suggest that an area that may need targeting for future improvements would be more rural areas.
